The time when all vehicles will use electric motors and electricity as means of propulsion is not that far in the future. The concept has been around for more than a century, but manufacturers have just now started exploiting the idea. With the current craze in SUV and trucks, outselling even the modest hatchbacks and sedans, it’s surprising that we haven’t seen a single fully-electric truck.
Cars, yes, plenty in fact, but not a single SUV or pickup. There are a dozen or so hybrids, most notably the Range Rover or even the Audi Q7, but no one has ventured into designing and producing a full-on electric truck. Until now that is.
Bollinger Motors opened shop in 2014, in the small village of Hobart, New York. They set a goal of creating the first ever fully electric SUV and have been working on the vehicle ever since. The SUV in question is a standalone creation, using its platform, drivetrain, and design. Here’s what we know so far about the truck.
For starters, it will have a unique composition inspired by the SUV’s durability and ruggedness. Simple, clean lines and flat sides. The exterior will be a mix of the founder’s favorite trucks from the past decades, producing a sort of greatest-hits design which will be timeless. The body panels will be entirely developed in-house, saving them the expensive process of molding and stamping. Here’s a sneak peek we’ve been offered into some of its design elements:
The truck promises best-in-class clearance, horsepower and torque figures, with a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. With an electric motor (or motors) producing twice the torque, a conventional combustion engine would, and the possibility to place them anywhere they want on the truck to get the perfect weight distribution, we’re entitled to believe Bollinger in these bold claims.
Couple that with the simple design which will presumably offer short overhangs and massive ground clearance, and the result will be nothing short of breath-taking. The perfect daily driver capable of annihilating most purpose built off-roaders on the trails. Now if that doesn’t get you excited, we don’t know what will.
In a nutshell, the perfect truck for work and play without any of the negatives associated with SUVs and pickups (carbon footprint, environmental effects, pollution, etc.). Bollinger wants to completely revolutionize the entire SUV as we know it, not just electrify it.
Should their first prototype work and gain popularity, which given the lack of any competition is almost a guarantee, they plan on advancing further with production and even start making pickups and purpose built off-roaders in the future. We’ll get to see the truck in all its glory at a soon-to-be-announced event in New York this summer, and given some sports cars and hypercars we’ve seen lately; we can’t wait for an all-electric SUV. A true breath of fresh air. All the best to the guys over at Bollinger Motors.
