Well, it is hardly a surprise to hear this bit of news, because the BlackBerry App store is going the way of the Dodo. While the majority of the world still rocks iOS and Android devices, there is still a handful(millions) of die-hard fans owning BB OS, and I’m one of them.

The writing has been on the wall for some time, and frankly, it’s a surprise the BlackBerry App store hasn’t folded in already.

It has been some two years since a new BB10 device jumped on the scene, as the company made the shift in running the Android OS.

Company CEO John Chen became laser-focused in turning the tech giant into a software-only organization, and he did just that.

Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel in hopes to compete against Apple and Google, Mr. Chen took the smart way out.

As of December 31, 2019, users won’t be able to get access to the App Store anymore.

Services such as the BlackBerry Travel site and Playbook video calling will go away in 2018.

Although the platform is winding down, there will be software support for up to 2 years for devices running BBOS.

User’s such as myself that crave a touch of nostalgia might be the only ones feeling a sense of disappointment.

Afterall, Blackberry is still a company that’s based locally for us, and there remains a sense of underlying loyalty even though TLC is making their smartphones.

But for those relying on legacy BB devices, it’s time for an upgrade.

There are plenty of devices on the market that offers an entirely new mobile experience.

At this time of year, wireless carriers are offering discounts on flagship devices on term contracts.

But if you are one of the few people who want to stay with Blackberry devices, then there is a little silver-lining for you.

  • BlackBerry Motion
  • BlackBerry Aurora
  • BlackBerry KEYone
  • DTEK60
  • DTEK50
  • BlackBerry Priv
  • BlackBerry Leap

The above mention devices all run on Android with a touch of the old BB flavor.

And as an added benefit, the company announced a bit of sobering news for fans:

As a further show of our appreciation and gratitude, we are working with our partners at BlackBerry Mobile to offer a trade-up program that will provide you with a significant discount and incentive to upgrade your current BlackBerry device to a new BlackBerry KeyOne or Motion, both of which are the world’s most secure Android smartphones.

Known for their durability and excellent build quality, it’s hardly a surprise that these legacy BB devices are still around.

Once renowned the world over for their robust security features, many government agencies, and corporations used these devices as apart of their infrastructure.

The brand loyalty is still there for millions of users around the world, but as we said earlier, it’s time for an upgrade.
